Lectures are free and open to the public for in-person and virtual attendance. \n“Carson’s Clarion Call: The Noisy Response to Silent Spring” – Mark Barrow\, Virginia Tech \nThe publication of Silent Spring (1962) generated a firestorm of controversy and helped catalyze the modern environmental movement. Why did Rachel Carson’s critique of modern pesticides have such a far-reaching impact? This lecture argues that its influence grew out of a convergence of Carson’s authority as both scientist and bestselling author\, a cultural climate of heightened anxiety about postwar chemical and nuclear technologies\, and the aggressive strategies of her critics. A trained biologist and accomplished writer with access to a broad network of scientific experts\, Carson offered readers a compelling\, accessible synthesis of the risks associated with the postwar embrace of synthetic pesticides. Equally important\, Silent Spring appeared at a moment of growing public concern over widely publicized chemical and pharmaceutical safety scandals and radioactive fallout from atmospheric nuclear testing. Finally\, the response of Carson’s critics—including chemical companies\, economic entomologists\, and U.S. Department of Agriculture officials—proved largely counterproductive: their concerted efforts to discredit Carson only amplified her message\, ensuring that the reaction to Silent Spring was anything but silent. \nMark V. Barrow\, Jr. is a professor of history at Virginia Tech whose work spans environmental\, animal\, and American cultural history\, as well as the history of biology\, natural history\, and wildlife conservation. A prizewinning teacher and scholar\, he is the author of A Passion for Birds: American Ornithology after Audubon (Princeton University Press\, 1998)\, Nature’s Ghosts: Confronting Extinction from the Age of Jefferson to the Age of Ecology (University of Chicago Press\, 2009)\, and Gator!: The Making of America’s Iconic Reptile\, from First Encounters to Florida Man (University of Chicago Press\, forthcoming). His research has been supported by the American Philosophical Society\, the National Science Foundation\, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. \nNo registration required for in-person attendance. Doors open at 7:30 PM\, lectures start at 8 PM in the Cornelia Clapp Auditorium. \n“Dance for Your Dinner: How Young Brains Signal Hunger to Their Parents” – Lauren O’Connell\, Stanford University \nIn the rainforests of Central and South America\, tiny poison frog parents make an extraordinary investment: they return again and again to their young\, delivering unfertilized eggs as food. In response\, their tadpoles perform a striking “begging dance\,” signaling their hunger with precise\, stereotyped movements. How does a developing brain generate this behavior—and how do parents recognize and respond to it? The O’Connell lab uses this vivid interaction to explore how internal states like hunger are translated into communication\, and how early social experiences shape the brain. By following this dialogue between parent and offspring\, her lab’s work uncovers fundamental principles of how brains give rise to social behavior\, from the very start of life. \nLauren A. O’Connell received her B.A. from Cornell University and her Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of Texas at Austin. She was a Bauer Fellow at Harvard University\, where she established her independent research program. Dr. O’Connell is currently an Associate Professor of Biology at Stanford University. Her research uses comparative and interdisciplinary approaches to understand how brains generate social behavior\, with a focus on parental care and communication in poison frogs. She has received numerous honors\, including the NIH Director’s New Innovator Award\, the Pew Biomedical Scholar Award\, and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers from President Biden. \nDoors open at 7:30 PM\, lectures start at 8:00 PM.

SUMMARY:Nature’s Engineers: Partnering with Beavers to Restore Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:The Woods Hole Public Library will welcome scientist\, engineer\, and experimentalist Jordan R. M. Kennedy to speak on Monday\, March 23\, at 6 PM. \nKennedy’s Ph.D thesis in materials science and mechanical engineering\, as well as her recent work\, focuses on how partnering with beavers can help restore North American landscapes. She is passionate about bridging science\, traditional knowledge\, and engineering to restore landscapes and reconnect with tradition and land. A member of the Blackfeet tribe\, Kennedy has worked as the Tribal Partnerships Liaison and Beaver Behaviorist at the Beaver Institute\, promoting the incorporation of tribal knowledge and Indigenous representation in the dissemination of knowledge about best practices concerning beavers in North American waterways. She is currently a ​​Traditional Ecological Knowledge Postdoctoral Researcher in Applied Ocean Physics & Engineering at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute\, and in partnership with the Tlingit Tribe of southeast Alaska\, her research is focused on clam gardens\, a highly productive Indigenous aquaculture technology engineered and stewarded for millennia by many Tribes across the Pacific Northwest. \n\,For her talk at the Woods Hole Public Library\, Kennedy will share her expertise on beaver ingenuity. Beavers are some of the best engineers in North America; they build dams\, dig canals\, and can completely transform a valley. Kennedy has helped to build a new computer tool to simulate that process\, starting with real landscape data (like maps of elevation and water flow) and then adding realistic beaver behavior. The result is a simulation where “virtual beavers” move around\, make choices about where to build\, and slowly reshape the landscape as they go. The goal is to use this tool to support restoration planning\, especially projects designed to work with beavers rather than against them. \nWith her work connecting science and technology with Indigenous knowledge and practices\, Kennedy’s research ties in perfectly with the 2026 Falmouth Reads Together selection – Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. In the book\, Kimmerer strives to blend scientific knowledge with Indigenous wisdom\, particularly from her Potawatomi heritage\, to explore humanity’s reciprocal relationship with the natural world. \nThis talk will be held in the Library’s lower level Community Room and is free and open to the public.
