One is a new work commissioned for the Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival and composed by Rosnes for jazz trio and classical string quartet. The Festival also commissioned two new arrangements for jazz trio and classical string quartet by GRAMMY-winning composer and orchestra leader Maria Schneider of her pieces Sky Blue and Walking by Flashlight. Harlem Quartet will perform Fanny Mendelssohn’s String Quartet in E-flat Major and Aldo López-Gavilán’s Frère Jacques.

Steve is a core member of the Maria Schneider Orchestra\, an 18-member ensemble made up of many of the finest musicians in jazz today\, and a regular member of the Billy Childs Quartet.\nRenee Rosnes’ distinguished career continues to reach new heights\, marked by new music\, compelling collaborations\, and ever-evolving artistry. She was a ten-year member of the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band. Her ensemble\, Artemis\, was named Jazz Group of the Year for three consecutive years (2023-2025) in Downbeat’s Annual Readers Poll. Her most recent recording\, Crossing Paths\, spent six weeks at No. 1 on the JazzWeek National Radio charts and is nominated for a 2026 JUNO award for Jazz Album of the Year. In 2018\, the Montréal Jazz Festival honored Renee with the Oscar Peterson Prize in recognition of her exceptional contributions to jazz. She is married to and collaborates with Bill Charlap\, also a world-renowned jazz pianist.\nA graduate of The Juilliard School\, where he studied classical music\, David Wong is a sought-after bass player. He has held the bass chair with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra for over 16 years\, and is currently a member of the Bill Charlap Trio\, Charles McPherson Quintet\, and Terell Stafford Quintet. David was a member of Roy Haynes’ Fountain of Youth band for 15 years\, of the Heath Brother’s Quartet\, led by Jimmy Heath and Albert “Tootie” Heath\, for 13 years\, and of Hank Jones’ Great Jazz Trio and is featured on the piano master’s last recording. DESCRIPTION:Dream Tale Puppets will present “Badger Meets the Fairies” by Margaret Moody Puppets for children ages 4 and up and their families. The door opens at 4:05 p.m. The show lasts about 40 minutes. \nMr. Badger is thrilled to meet Blossom\, a flower fairy\, in the garden. He flies away with her to help the fairies build a playground. But then it’s complicated: the fairies won’t use cement\, and Mr. Badger wants to learn to fly. This gentle tale is based on European fairy lore. “Badger Meets the Fairies” is best for ages 4 to 10 and lasts 40 minutes. \nFairy puppets and sets for their garden were built by visual artist Sandra Pastrana and Margaret Moody. Alison Plante of Berklee School of Music composed original music for the piece based on Celtic melodies. \nDream Tale Puppets\, founded in 2003 and led by Jacek Zuzanski\, is a touring ensemble of artists based on Cape Cod and beyond. The theatre offers original puppetry performances for children and families\, workshops and classes\, and occasionally presents other puppetry theatres. \nThis program is sponsored by the Woods Hole Community Association and supported by a grant from the Woods Hole Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:Lifelong sailor Bill Womack visits the library with a fascinating look into the history of the Beetle Cat sailboat on Wednesday\, July 22 at 5 p.m. Free and open to all. This program is brought to you in partnership with the Chapoquoit Yacht Club. \nJoin the owner of Beetle\, Inc. at the library for this unique opportunity to dive into the history of the Beetle Cat\, from the Beetle Whaleboats in the 1800s in New Bedford to the boat’s present-day construction at the Beetle Cat Boat Shop in Wareham\, MA. \nGrowing up sailing Beetle Cats in the 1950s out on Onset Harbor\, and a life-long love of traditional wooden sailing craft\, made the opportunity to own and work with these timeless\, classic boats perfect for Bill Womack. In addition to childhood experiences and personal interests\, Bill also served in the United States Navy with Seabee Team 1110/1114 in South Vietnam from 1966 to 1970. A degree in Civil Engineering and over 40 years working in heavy highway construction as a Professional Engineer and Operations Manager\, helped to prepare him for the important task of preserving the art of traditional plank-on-frame wood boat construction at the Beetle Boat Shop.

Each of Alice’s encounters—some silly\, some strange\, and some a little spooky—challenges her sense of reality and her sense of self. Will Alice find her kitten? Will anyone lend a hand? And how do you navigate a place where logic takes a nap? Join Alice on her topsy-turvy adventure and see where the dream leads! \nThe performance features a variety of puppet types\, including tabletop\, figure\, glove\, and rod puppets. The sets and most of the puppets were created by Jacek Zuzanski\, who will be joined on stage by Margaret Moody and Sarah Kahn. \nFollowing “Alice\, or the Red King’s Dream\,” the series wraps up with a performance of “Badger Meets the Fairies” by Margaret Moody Puppets on Friday\, July 24\, at 4:30 p.m.\, at the Old Fire Station in Woods Hole. \nDream Tale Puppets\, founded in 2003 and led by Jacek Zuzanski\, is a touring ensemble of artists living on Cape Cod and beyond. Lectures are free and open to the public for in-person and virtual attendance. \n“Carson’s Clarion Call: The Noisy Response to Silent Spring” – Mark Barrow\, Virginia Tech \nThe publication of Silent Spring (1962) generated a firestorm of controversy and helped catalyze the modern environmental movement. Why did Rachel Carson’s critique of modern pesticides have such a far-reaching impact? This lecture argues that its influence grew out of a convergence of Carson’s authority as both scientist and bestselling author\, a cultural climate of heightened anxiety about postwar chemical and nuclear technologies\, and the aggressive strategies of her critics. A trained biologist and accomplished writer with access to a broad network of scientific experts\, Carson offered readers a compelling\, accessible synthesis of the risks associated with the postwar embrace of synthetic pesticides. Equally important\, Silent Spring appeared at a moment of growing public concern over widely publicized chemical and pharmaceutical safety scandals and radioactive fallout from atmospheric nuclear testing. Finally\, the response of Carson’s critics—including chemical companies\, economic entomologists\, and U.S. Department of Agriculture officials—proved largely counterproductive: their concerted efforts to discredit Carson only amplified her message\, ensuring that the reaction to Silent Spring was anything but silent. \nMark V. Barrow\, Jr. is a professor of history at Virginia Tech whose work spans environmental\, animal\, and American cultural history\, as well as the history of biology\, natural history\, and wildlife conservation. A prizewinning teacher and scholar\, he is the author of A Passion for Birds: American Ornithology after Audubon (Princeton University Press\, 1998)\, Nature’s Ghosts: Confronting Extinction from the Age of Jefferson to the Age of Ecology (University of Chicago Press\, 2009)\, and Gator!: The Making of America’s Iconic Reptile\, from First Encounters to Florida Man (University of Chicago Press\, forthcoming). Tracing its origins to the “Talking Drums” of Western Africa to the complexities of numerous composers and performers – women and men\, jazz has birthed a wide array of familiar formats including Bebop\, Blues\, Broadway Musicals\, Calypso\, Contemporary Symphonic and Opera\, Gospel\, Rhythm and Blues\, Rock & Roll\, Scat and Soul. \nThis presentation will sample contributions of women and men in jazz during the past hundred years; relying upon luminaries including Dorothy Donegan\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Natalie Cole\, Eva Cassidy\, Diana Krall\, Yoko Miwa\, Samara Joy\, Christine Fawson\, Judy Carmichael\, and others (many whose music has been featured in the Falmouth Jazz Festival). Aspects of the musical and personal lives of these performers will  be presented and samplings of their recorded performances will be played \nRobert Silver is a recently retired scientist and professor with more than a half-century in research and teaching\, and even longer as a fan of classical\, jazz and blues music.

In response\, their tadpoles perform a striking “begging dance\,” signaling their hunger with precise\, stereotyped movements. How does a developing brain generate this behavior—and how do parents recognize and respond to it? The O’Connell lab uses this vivid interaction to explore how internal states like hunger are translated into communication\, and how early social experiences shape the brain. By following this dialogue between parent and offspring\, her lab’s work uncovers fundamental principles of how brains give rise to social behavior\, from the very start of life. \nLauren A. O’Connell received her B.A. from Cornell University and her Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of Texas at Austin. She was a Bauer Fellow at Harvard University\, where she established her independent research program. Dr. O’Connell is currently an Associate Professor of Biology at Stanford University. Her research uses comparative and interdisciplinary approaches to understand how brains generate social behavior\, with a focus on parental care and communication in poison frogs. DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the role of crafts and how the “handmade” is woven into our nation’s history\, the Falmouth Cultural Council is partnering with Highfield Hall & Gardens to present “Democracy\,” an award-winning documentary produced by the nonprofit organization Craft in America.\n \n\nThe free screening will take place on Wednesday\, July 1\, 7 PM at Highfield Hall & Gardens\, 56 Highfield Drive\, Falmouth. Registration is recommended online at https://highfieldhallandgardens.org/event/craft-in-america-democracy-screening/ \nThe event is part of Craft in America’s “Handwork: Celebrating American Craft 2026\,” a nationwide initiative to celebrate the diversity of crafts that define America and bring underrepresented art and artists into the spotlight.  \nThe artists highlighted in the film include ceramic artist and Gulf War Marine Veteran Ehren Tool who uses his work “to vindicate the principles of peace and justice in the world”; calligrapher Sammy Little\, who demonstrates how cursive writing—whether in the country’s founding documents or her great-great-grandfather’s Civil War letters—creates personal connections that bring history to life; and the educators and students of historic Berea College\, who sell their handmade wares to support the school’s commitment to tuition-free learning and to “lifting up democracy and the promises of America.” \nFollowing the 56-minute film\, the audience will participate in a discussion about the ideas raised by the film. Although the film premiered in December 2020\, the issues it raises—the importance of federal support for the arts and national institutions\, such as the Smithsonian Museum—remain current. \nAlice Kociemba\, chairperson of the Cultural Council\, describes the film as both inspirational and provocative. “The Council thought that co-sponsoring this event with Highfield Hall & Gardens would be a way for the whole community to engage in how the arts reflect the promises of democracy. Inspired by a lifelong love of nature\, her work centers on translating the beauty of plants and flowers into lasting color on textiles\, creating pieces that reflect both place and season. \nWhen she isn’t working with botanicals\, she can be found teaching and learning alongside tiny humans as an early childhood educator. She lives in East Sandwich with her husband and son\, where she’s continually inspired by the natural world around her. \nWest Falmouth Library is  proud to have her as their July Artist of the Month.

DESCRIPTION:Join local author Don Wilding for a special author talk on Sunday\, June 28 at 4 p.m.\, featuring his new release Prohibition on Cape Cod: Running the Rum In. He uncovers stories\, ranging from horrifying to humorous\, from this unforgettable age of contraband and controversy on Cape Cod. This event will be followed by a book signing and sale in partnership with Eight Cousins Bookstore. \nFishermen\, Farmers and Gangsters on the Cape risk everything to bring in the rum. During Prohibition\, rumrunning was big business on Cape Cod. Fishermen and farmers\, such as Provincetown’s Manny Zora and Eastham’s Bud Cummings\, headed offshore to “Rum Row” under cover of darkness\, bringing the criminal yet coveted alcohol home. They risked heavy fines\, jail time\, and even their lives in encounters with law enforcement\, hijackers\, and gangsters. Sandwich’s Eugene Haines\, a staunch supporter of Prohibition\, mysteriously disappeared\, believed to have been murdered by rumrunners. \nDon Wilding is the author of six books on Cape Cod history: Historic Storms of Cape Cod\, released in May 2024; Cape Cod and the Portland Gale of 1898\, published in May 2023; Henry Beston’s Cape Cod: How ‘The Outermost House’ Inspired a National Seashore\, A Brief History of Eastham: On the Outer Beach of Cape Cod\, and Shipwrecks of Cape Cod: Stories of Triumph & Tragedy. Prohibition on Cape Cod: Running The Rum In is his most recent published work. \nDon has worked as a Cape tour guide and is a regular speaker on Cape Cod lore in Massachusetts and across New England. He was an award-winning newspaper editor\, writer\, and designer in Massachusetts for 36 years\, including a recent stint as a contributing history columnist and photographer for Cape newspapers. Don has also led history walks for the Harwich Conservation Trust since 2018 and was recognized as one of their “Conservationists of the Year” in 2023. \nDon has also been an instructor of Cape Cod history courses for the Open University of Wellfleet and Nauset Community Education.

SUMMARY:Artisans at the Harbor opens June 25 for the Summer
DESCRIPTION:Artisans at the Harbor\, ArtsFalmouth’s weekly summer art market opens Thursday\, June 25\, offering works by local artisans and live music performances. The market takes place every Thursday from 11 AM to 4 PM\, June 25 to August 27\, at Falmouth Marine Park\, 180 Scranton Avenue\, in Falmouth. In case of rain on Thursday\, the market will be held on Friday\, weather permitting. \n“I am very excited about the variety of artisans and musicians joining us for the 2026 season\,” said Diane Precourt\, coordinator of the market and ArtsFalmouth board member. \n“This year\, fifty-four vendors will be setting up to sell their handmade wares\,” she said. “Some will be with us for the full ten weeks\, while others will join us occasionally. We have an amazing committee that works behind the scenes to bring all the pieces of this market together. \n “We are pleased that many of our popular artisan ‘regulars\,’ will be back this summer\, and we are delighted to welcome many talented creators who are joining us this year\,” Ms. Precourt said. “We will not be accepting any new vendor applications this season.” \nArtisans at the Harbor features a wide array of handmade works by local artisans and craftspeople\, including meditation cushions and eye pillows\, wellness products; sea glass\, shell\, polymer clay\, silver\, and beaded jewelry; pottery and glass items; watercolor\, oil\, pen-and-ink\, and acrylic paintings\, prints\, and cards; photography;  mosaics\, vases\, planters\, and  baskets\, candles\, and other home décor items; paper crafts; fish art on t-shirts\, decoupage\, and canvas; and new\, dyed\, and recycled clothing and accessories. \nLocal musicians will perform from 1:30 to 3:30  PM at Artisans at the Harbor. Kim Moberg and Heather Swanson will perform on opening day\, June 25. \nAward winning singer/songwriter/guitarist Kim Moberg was born in Juneau\, Alaska\, the daughter of a mother of Alaskan Native Tlingit descent and a US Coast Guard veteran father from Kansas. Kim’s rich vocals have been described as “a blend of honey and whiskey\,” \nHer third album “The Seven Fires Prophecy: Suite for Humanity” (2023) is an eight-song original suite that ties the ancient Anishinaabe prophecy to our current social environment. The project blossomed from Kim’s desire to share what she learned about Indigenous teachings and the important and relevant life lessons they offer.  \nKim’s fourth release “All That Really Matters” (2026) feature songs that span the arc of human experiences loss\, betrayal\, melancholy\, friendship\, racism\, and love. \nShe is joined by Heather Swanson\, a classical violinist who crossed over to folk and traditional Celtic music. Her CD\, “Beside Quiet Waters\,” is a collection of traditional and contemporary Celtic tunes. Kim and Heather have been performing their original music and covers together for nearly ten years. \n“We are excited to be able to continue the art market’s 19-year tradition of providing artisans with a low-cost venue\, musicians with space to perform\, and the community with an enjoyable afternoon by the Harbor\,” said Marilyn Rowland\, president of ArtsFalmouth and music coordinator for Artisans at the Harbor. \n“It’s always fun for us\, the vendors\, to enjoy an afternoon by Falmouth Harbor\,  meeting new people\, and enjoying the rich array of talent the Falmouth and Cape Cod community has to offer\,” she said\, “and I know that Falmouth residents and visitors enjoy it too.” \n“We look forward to a great summer by the harbor and encourage area residents and visitors to come down and enjoy local creative arts and music\,” Ms. Precourt and Ms. Rowland agreed. \nFor more information\, visit artisansattheharbor.com or artsfalmouth.org.
