SUMMARY:“Unexpected Encounters” an exhibition by Alan Trugman
DESCRIPTION:“Unexpected Encounters”\, an exhibition by Alan Trugman\, will be on view at Woodruff’s Art Center from October 3 through November 14. An opening reception will take place on Friday\, October 3 from 5-6:30 pm. The event is free and open to the public. \n“Unexpected Encounters\,” is a creative exploration into the possibilities of printmaking. Alan’s unique approach combines the techniques of relief and monoprinting\, creating an interplay between the inherent structure of the carved relief plates and the expressive spontaneity of monotype printmaking. Each print is a singular work of art that reveals a dialogue between color and mark. Alan’s process of printing and responding allows for a balance between intention and unpredictability\, resulting in compositions that are both deliberate and unexpected. \nAlan is a multidisciplinary artist working in printmaking\, photography\, and digital art. Born in New York and raised in Los Angeles\, he studied theater at Los Angeles City College and the University of Southern California. He spent 20 years in the entertainment industry\, contributing to both costuming and costume design for television and film\, before relocating to Cape Cod in 1993 to reconnect with his passion for visual art.

SUMMARY:Falmouth Chamber Players Orchestra Fall concerts
DESCRIPTION:The Falmouth Chamber Players Orchestra\, under the direction of conductor Thomas Kociela\, will present its Fall Concerts\, titled “Charm\, Elegance\, and Wit\,” on Saturday\, November 1\, at 3 PM\, and Sunday\, November 2\, at 3 PM\, at Morse Pond School Auditorium\, 323 Jones Road\, in Falmouth. \nThe program includes the Overture to L’italiana in Algeri by Rossini\, Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 3 featuring soloist Gigi Turgeon\, and Haydn’s Symphony No. 101\, “The Clock.” \n“We are pleased to welcome back Thomas Kociela as our conductor for this season\,” said Melanie Hayn\, president of the orchestra. Thomas G. Kociela\, FCPO conductor for the 2025-2026 season\, is also music director of the Rhode Island College Symphony Orchestra and the Parkway Concert Orchestra (Norwood\, MA). \nOf the program\, Kociela says\, “The program title\, ‘Charm\, Elegance and Wit\,’ says it all. Rossini brings the charm\, drawing listeners in with his unmistakable style and spirited energy. Next\, Mozart’s elegant Violin Concerto No. 3 is performed by our concertmaster Gigi Turgeon\, whose artistry brings to life Mozart’s blend of grace\, expressive lyricism\, and precise clarity. And Haydn\, of course\, can’t resist showing off his wit. Through playful craftsmanship\, Haydn continually delights\, setting up expectations and then turning them upside down in the most surprising way. Together\, these works create a concert experience that radiates pure joy!” \nGioachino Rossini (1792-1813) is known for his sparkling\, witty\, and lively overtures\, designed to entertain and cheer an audience\, and his Overture to L’italiana in Algeri (The Italian Girl in Algiers) is one of his best. The opera\, completed in less than a month\, tells the tale of a Turkish Bey in Algiers who is bored by his harem and orders his captain to find him an Italian girl to liven things up. The overture begins with calm and stately pizzicatos from the strings and a gentle oboe solo\, followed by a sudden fortissimo outburst from the whole orchestra\, some delightful woodwind solos\, and several vibrant “Rossini crescendos\,” setting the stage for the zany and implausible tale of love and intrigue\, which follows. \nMozart presented his five violin concertos\, composed between 1773-1775\, during his concertizing tour between 1777-1779. These concertos perfectly promoted his talents as a skillful composer as well as a masterful violinist. Concerto No.3 in G major demonstrates a variety of his best qualities. \nSoloist Guiomar (Gigi) Turgeon describes the concerto: “The first movement is delightfully cheerful and energetic. The second movement is a true Adagio (rarely used by Mozart) which includes the gentle tones of muted strings\, pulsating rhythms\, plucked bassi and delicate flutes to create a beautiful and serene color. The third movement displays Mozart’s quirky humor. Throughout his rustic theme\, he inserts the Austrian “Strassburger” tune which without a doubt displays his sentimental ties to his Salzburg home. \n“Within this single composition\, Mozart satisfies with buoyant energy\, surprising color and whimsical flare making this an audience favorite.” \n“I’m excited to be working with Gigi as our soloist for this concert\,” said Hayn. “Her playing is so delicate and expressive; it’s a real inspiration to the players.” \nA third-generation musician\, Ms. Turgeon began her violin studies at the age of three and worked under many prominent violin masters. She has performed in orchestras led by Leonard Bernstein\, Christopher Hogwood\, Grant Llewellyn\, Seizi Ozawa\, and John Williams. She is also concertmaster for the Dedham Choral Society and performs regularly with many Boston ensembles and founder and director of the Clerici Chamber Music Series. \nJoseph Haydn (1732-1809) was known as the “Father of the Symphony” for his role in defining the classical musical style. He achieved worldwide fame during his lifetime\, writing a total of 104 symphonies. No. 101 is part of a group of twelve “London symphonies\,” so-called because they were commissioned to be performed in that city. Composed during the winter of 1793-1794 in Vienna\, and premiered to in London in March of 1794\, No. 101 is known as the “Clock” symphony because of the “tick-tock” rhythm created by the pizzicato lower strings and staccato bassoons in the second movement. Immensely popular at its premiere\, the symphony is still regarded as one of the world’s greatest symphonies. It shimmers with energy\, intensity\, wit\, and charm. \nA donation at the door of $20 for adults and $5 for young professionals is suggested\, with free admission for students. Tickets are available only at the door. For more information\, visit falmouthchamberplayers.org. \nThe FCPO is funded in part by the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod\, the Falmouth Cultural Council\, the Mass Cultural Council\, the Cape Cod Melody Tent\, and the Woods Hole Foundation.

SUMMARY:Jazz Celebration Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:ArtsFalmouth will hold a Jazz Celebration Fundraiser on Wednesday\, November 5\, from 6:30 to 9:30 PM at the Daily Brew Coffee House & Lounge\, 412 North Falmouth Highway in North Falmouth. Doors open at 6 PM. \n“We are very pleased to be able to showcase a number of outstanding local and regional jazz players\,” said Pat Ryan of Full Spectrum Music\, who has worked with ArtsFalmouth to organize the event. “It will be a treat for everyone\, from jazz lovers to those who would enjoy an introduction to some of the many accomplished improvising musicians the Cape has to offer.” \nPerformers will include vocalists Andrea Capozzoli\, Olivia Yingling\, and Tish Adams\, brass and reed players Dennis Cook\, Mark Greel\, and Joe Mongelli\, and rhythm section players Andy Troyanos\, Fred Fried\, Laird Boles\, and Matthew Hutchinson. \nThey will be supported by a versatile house band of Chris Taylor on keys\, Zac Casher on drums\, Eric T. Johnson on bass\, and Pat Ryan on guitar.  \n“There are sure to be some surprise unannounced musical guests as well\,” said Ryan. ArtsFalmouth president Marilyn Rowland noted\, “Many of them have performed in various ensembles at ArtsFalmouth’s Jazz Stroll and other local events\, but this will be an exciting opportunity to see and hear them all in one room.” \nRyan\, who has performed with various jazz artists at the Daily Brew Coffee House & Lounge on Sundays this past summer\, said\, “The Brew is an exciting new music venue that has been attracting a lot of attention. The acoustics\, aesthetics\, and overall vibe are just incredible. This will be a fun evening of great music\, fellowship\, and\, of course\, good food and drink.” \nTickets are $25 per person in advance and are available on the Daily Brew website. \nThe purpose of the fundraiser is to support and supplement ArtsFalmouth’s ongoing jazz programming. This year\, for the first time since the Jazz Stroll was initiated in 2011\, ArtsFalmouth did not have sufficient funds available to support the Stroll\, and the event\, which featured up to a dozen jazz performances in shops\, restaurants\, and public spaces\, all free and open to the public\, had to be canceled. \n“We’re working hard to continue to find funding sources to enable us to continue all of our events: the Woods Hole Trad Stroll in May\, Arts Alive in June\, and the Jazz Stroll in October and also to expand our jazz programming\,” said Rowland. “We are calling on all those who value the role of the arts in contributing to the cultural vitality and creative economy of Falmouth and the Upper Cape to help us continue and expand our free and affordable events for all members of our community.” \nFor those who want to help but are unable to attend the fundraiser or who want to donate more\, visit the ArtsFalmouth.org and click on Jazz Celebration Fundraiser or Donate. \nFor more information\, email artsfalmouthinc@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Woods Hole Film Festival Dinner and a Movie
DESCRIPTION:The Woods Hole Film Festival Dinner & A Movie series continues Saturday\, Nov. 15\, 2025\, with the feature documentary FOLKTALES by Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady\, US\, Norway\, 106 mins.\, English and Norwegian. \nIn Norse mythology\, the three “Norns” are powerful deities who weave the threads of fate and shape humans’ futures. Today\, Pasvik Folk High School in northern Norway aims to produce a similar life-changing effect on its students. FOLKTALES tells the timely and emotional story of teenagers who choose to spend an unconventional “gap year” learning to dog sled and survive the Arctic wilderness\, in hopes of finding connection and meaning in the modern world. \nExhausted by loneliness\, social anxiety\, and all the crushing pressures felt by Gen Z\, three teenagers make the daring decision to leave the comforts of home to enroll in a traditional “folk high school” in the wilds of northern Norway. Dropped in the arctic wilderness for one year\, Hege\, Romain\, and Bjørn Tore must rely on themselves and a pack of loyal sled dogs as they take the daunting step from childhood to adulthood. Freed of technology\, social media\, and the noise of modern life\, this brave trio learn to face themselves for the first time – and experience an unexpected\, wondrous transformation. Guided by patient teachers and a yard full of Alaskan huskies\, they discover their own potential and develop deep relationships with the land\, animals and humans around them. \nFor nearly two centuries\, Scandinavian folk high schools – some of which are rooted in the lessons of Norse mythology – have emphasized the power of nature\, simplicity\, and community to transform young lives. “We hope we can wake up your Stone Age brain\,” Pasvik instructor Iselin tells her students. Through intimate verité storytelling and exhilarating cinematography\, Academy Award®-nominated filmmakers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady examine humans on the cusp of adulthood\, finding themselves at the edge of the world. \nABOUT THE FILMMAKERS \nHeidi Ewing and Rachel Grady\, WHFF alumni\, are the co-directors of Jesus Camp (Academy Award nominee)\, The Boys of Baraka (Emmy nominee)\, 12th & Delaware (Peabody Award winner)\, DETROPIA (Emmy winner)\, Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You\, One of Us\, Love Fraud\, and Endangered. They are the co-owners of Brooklyn-based production company Loki Films. \nABOUT DINNER & A MOVIE \nDinner & A Movie is a program of the Winter/Spring Film Series\, twice-monthly in-person screenings of independent film from September 2025 through June 2026. Registration is  required online. \nThe members of the Ensemble are Shirie Leng\, violin; Jessica Baum\, viola; Judith Glixon\, cello; Daniel Goodman\, piano; Michael Goldring\, double bass & voice. \nThe ensemble writes: “French Impressions is our 2025 Fall concert primarily featuring pieces by French composers. The concert also includes an original composition by our cellist\, Judith Glixon. Many of the pieces are in the shimmering French Impressionist style of Debussy\, Ravel and Faure. \n“We have included two audience favorites from the period – an arrangement of Debussy’s Clair de Lune for viola and piano\, and of Faure’s Pavane for piano trio. Also on the program are an early French trio sonata by Boismortier and a contrasting string trio by Russian composer Sergey Taneyev. The piano at the West Falmouth Library was built in the late 19th century. Early pianos have a different sound than modern ones\, so French Impressionist music performed on the instrument sounds like what the composers would have heard in their day.” \nThe ensemble is named Pernambuco because of their connections to pernambuco wood and their concern for the environment. Pernambuco has been used in the making of bows for over 250 years\, enhancing the performance of stringed music for generations. Today\, pernambuco is increasingly rare and endangered in many areas of its native habitat. By supporting their performances you join the ensemble on their mission to raise awareness and funds for environmental causes.
