SUMMARY:International Book Group – Midaq Alley by Najīb Maḥfūẓ
DESCRIPTION:The International Book Group at West Falmouth Library is a volunteer-led group that meets on the first Wednesday of each month 3:45-5 p.m. Selections have either foreign settings or foreign authors\, usually both. New members are always welcome! Annual registration is requested to receive important communications about schedule or location changes. Meetings are both in-person and on Zoom. \nConsidered by many to be Mahfouz’s best novel\, Midaq Alley centers around the residents of one of the hustling\, teeming back alleys of Cairo. No other novel so vividly evokes the sights and sounds of the city. The universality and timelessness of this book cannot be denied. \n“Naguib Mahfouz virtually invented the novel as an Arab form. He excels at fusing deep emotion and soap opera.” —The New York Times Book Review \n“Mahfouz’s work is freshly nuanced and hauntingly lyrical. The Nobel Prize acknowledges the universal significance of his fiction.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review

SUMMARY:Metamorphoses at Cotuit Center for the Arts
DESCRIPTION:Cotuit Center for the Arts invites audiences to immerse themselves in the breathtaking world of Metamorphoses\, a spellbinding theatrical masterpiece inspired by Ovid’s ancient myths. Directed by Jason R. Mellin\, this evocative production runs February 6 through February 22 and brings stories of love\, loss\, transformation\, and redemption vividly to life. \nWritten by Tony Award–winning playwright Mary Zimmerman\, Metamorphoses masterfully blends classical mythology with contemporary themes\, using poetic language and striking visual storytelling to explore what it means to change\, to grieve\, and to love. Set within a fluid\, dreamlike world where gods and mortals collide\, the production blurs the boundary between myth and reality—creating an unforgettable theatrical experience that resonates long after the final moment. \n“Metamorphoses reminds us that change is inevitable—and often beautiful\, even when it’s painful\,” said director Jason R. Mellin. “This play speaks to the heart in a way few stories can. It’s visually stunning\, emotionally raw\, and deeply human. We’ve assembled an incredible ensemble\, and I truly believe this is a production audiences will feel in their bones.” \nPerformances will take place Fridays at 7:30 PM\, Saturdays at 5:00 PM\, and Sundays at 2:00 PM. \nThe cast includes: Lily Anderson\, Amelia Burbine\, Bill Farrell\, Emma Fitzpatrick\, Drew Frayre\, Janet Geist Moore\, Maeve Moriarty\, Erica Morris\, Avila Rudd\, Sam Sewell\, Pete Steedman\, Rachel Walman\, and Shelley West. \nGenerous support for Cotuit Center for the Arts’ main stage theater productions is graciously provided in tribute to John McGraw. \nWith its powerful performances\, immersive design\, and timeless themes\, Metamorphoses offers audiences an opportunity to experience theater at its most transformative. \nTickets are on sale now\, and early reservations are strongly encouraged. \nFor tickets and more information\, visit cotuit.org. \n

SUMMARY:Fabric & Fiber Sale
DESCRIPTION:Woods Hole Public Library volunteers will be holding their eagerly awaited Fabric & Fiber Sale on Sunday\, February 8\, from 10 AM to 2 PM. People come from far and wide\, first to donate\, and later to buy fabric\, yarn\, notions\, and much more. This one day event is a major source of fundraising for the Library’s operating budget\, and the generosity of both donors and shoppers are crucial to its success. \nAfter Falmouth’s only fabric store\, Fabric Corner\, burned down in 2014 leaving the town without a local place to buy material for sewing projects\, Woods Hole Public Library community members hatched a plan to hold a fundraiser sale on Super Bowl Sunday at the Library. The first sale in February 2015 was a great success\, and the tradition has continued and grown every year\, with only a one year interruption due to Covid\, making this year’s sale the 11th anniversary of this community event. \nThe Woods Hole Library is accepting donations for both the Fabric & Fiber Sale until February 5. If you are doing some end of the year cleaning of fabric\, yarn\, craft supplies\, jewelry\, and accessories\, bring your unwanted treasures to the Library! Donating helps to keep items out of the waste stream and into the hands of eager crafters while also benefiting our community-supported village Library. \nDonations for the sale have been pouring in since the beginning of January. Among this year’s treasures are a large collection of trimmings for upholstery projects\, many sewing machines\, tabletop looms\, rug hooking materials\, quilting and knitting books\, vintage textiles\, luxury yarns\, and much more. As usual\, there is an abundance of quilting cotton\, decorator fabrics\, and fleece of all colors and patterns. Along with notions\, knitting needles\, and a veritable rainbow of workhorse acrylic yarns\, there is truly something to delight every crafter. \nMany volunteer hours go into making this sale a well-organized\, fun\, community shopping experience. The Woods Hole Public Library is happy to offer this sale both as an important source of fundraising and as a way to further its mission of sharing community resources. For more information\, please visit woodsholepubliclibrary.org or call 508-548-8961. Please note\, free parking for this event is available just down the street from the Library in WHOI’s Challenger Lot.

SUMMARY:Online Pre-Release Listening Session: "Ba-Da-Bu Ba" by WAMPTRONICA
DESCRIPTION:Poly-Groove Records invites you to an online listening party on Bandcamp celebrating Ba-Da-Bu-Ba\, a project rooted in groove\, improvisation\, and collective listening. \nThe event takes place Tuesday\, February 10\, from 8 to 8:30 PM at Bandcamp Listening Party. \nThis is not a performance or livestreamed set. It is a shared listening experience: the music played front to back\, in real time\, with space for reflection\, conversation\, and presence. Listeners are invited to tune in from wherever they are and experience the project as a continuous work\, rather than as isolated tracks. \nBa-Da-Bu-Ba sits at the intersection of deep rhythm\, jazz sensibility\, and Afro-diasporic musical traditions. The listening party creates a space outside of algorithms and playlists\, returning to a slower\, more intentional way of engaging with music—together. \nDate: February 10\, 2026\nTime: 8:00 pm\nLocation: Online — Bandcamp Listening Party\nhttps://polygrooverecords.bandcamp.com/…/ba-da-bu-ba…\nHost: Poly-Groove Records\nArtist: WAMPTRONICA\nHeadphones encouraged.\nConversation welcome.\nThere is no charge to attend.\nThis event is open to longtime listeners\, collaborators\, and anyone interested in music that values musicianship\, groove\, and communal experience.

SUMMARY:Woods Hole Film Festival presents "Sorry\, Baby"
DESCRIPTION:The Woods Hole Film Festival’s Dinner & A Movie series presents a screening of  Sorry\, Baby\, on Saturday\, February 14 at 7PM\,  at Redfield Auditorium\, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution\, 45 Water Street\, Woods Hole\nDoors open at 6:30 PM \nSorry\, Baby is the acclaimed narrative feature written and directed by Eva Victor (USA\, 2025\, 103 minutes\, Rated R)\, starring Eva Victor\, Naomi Ackie\, Lucas Hedges\, John Carroll Lynch\, Louis Cancelmi\, and Kelly McCormack. \nThis feature comedy-drama is an acerbically funny and quietly powerful story about learning how to move forward when bad things happen. \nTickets: $18 general admission | $14 members | $10 students & military \nABOUT THE FILM \nSynopsis:\nSomething bad happened to Agnes. But life goes on—for everyone around her\, at least. When a beloved friend visits on the brink of a major milestone\, Agnes begins to realize just how stuck she’s been\, and starts to find a way forward. \nShot in Ipswich\, Massachusetts\, Sorry\, Baby is a quietly triumphant story about reclaiming one’s footing after the ground has been yanked out from under you. Unabashedly frank and unexpectedly funny\, the film offers a fresh and deeply human take on living with an experience you can’t simply “get over.” \nIn an auspicious triple-threat debut\, writer-director-star Eva Victor upends traditional narratives of trauma by focusing not on spectacle\, but on the interior\, often unseen act of mending oneself. As Agnes—a smart\, sensitive\, and wry young professor in an overcast New England college town where she was once a graduate student—Victor captures the absurdities\, pleasures\, confusions\, and possibilities of a life just beginning\, even as it is shaped by profound disruption. \nWith friends drifting away into distant futures\, Agnes remains in the town where she once thrived and later hit rock bottom after a shocking betrayal. Eschewing formulaic postmortems of violence\, Sorry\, Baby unfolds as a vibrant comedy-drama that embraces complexity\, resilience\, and humor without turning away from the trauma at its core. \nProduced by Barry Jenkins\, Adele Romanski\, and Mark Ceryak of Pastel (Moonlight\, Aftersun)\, Sorry\, Baby won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and marks the arrival of a bold and unforgettable new voice in American cinema. \nABOUT DINNER & A MOVIE \nDinner & A Movie is part of the Woods Hole Film Festival’s Winter/Spring Film Series\, featuring twice-monthly in-person screenings of independent films from September 2025 through June 2026. Screenings are held at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s Redfield Auditorium\, located at 45 Water Street in Woods Hole. \nTickets are available in advance at www.woodsholefilmfestival.org and at the door if not sold out. \nBefore the screening\, ticket holders may receive a discount on the meal portion of dinner at Quahog Republic Leeside Pub\, 29 Railroad Avenue\, Woods Hole. \nUPCOMING SCREENING \nMR. SUMMARY:Tea Time Book Club – Anxious People: a Novel by Fredrik Backman
DESCRIPTION:The Tea Time Book Club meets once a month on the third Thursday at 6 p.m. Each time we meet\, we’ll enjoy tea and take some time to catch up and get to know each other. We’ll discuss the book of the month and everyone will have an opportunity to recommend a book for the group to vote on for upcoming months. \nThe selection for the February 19 meeting is Anxious People: a Novel by Fredrik Backman. Taken hostage by a failed bank robber while attending an open house\, eight anxiety-prone strangers—including a redemption-seeking bank director\, two couples who would fix their marriages\, and a plucky octogenarian—discover their unexpected common traits. \n“A deeply funny and warm examination of how individual experiences can bring a random group of people together. Backman reveals each character’s many imperfections with tremendous empathy\, reminding us that people are always more than the sum of their flaws.” —BookPage \n“The perfect balance of heartwarming and heart-wrenching\, and Fredrik Backman has a way of simply yet elegantly describing relationships. We can all be idiots\, but we’re still all human beings worthy of connection and love.” –NPR

SUMMARY:The African American Heritage Trail of Martha’s Vineyard
DESCRIPTION:Highfield Hall & Gardens celebrates Black History Month with a talk by Elaine Weintraub on the African American Heritage Trail of Martha’s Vineyard (AAHTMV) on Saturday\, February 28\, from 11 AM to 12 PM. \nThe African American Heritage Trail of Martha’s Vineyard (AAHTMV) is a pathway dedicated to the contributions of the people of African descent to the Island. Established in 1998\, the AAHTMV celebrates the community\, encourages student involvement\, and advocates for inclusive history.   \nCo-founders Carrie Camillo Tankard and Elaine Cawley Weintraub met in 1989 and recognized a common mission to introduce the history of people of color into the Vineyard schools. Beginning with just four sites\, the trail has grown to more than 42 plaques today\, and the expansion to Falmouth began last fall\, with a commemoration of an African American scientist at the Marine Biological Laboratory.  \nThe talk is free to the public. Preregistration is requested. Please register at:https://highfieldhallandgardens.org/event/talk-with-elaine-weintraub/ \nHighfield Hall & Gardens is at 56 Highfield Drive\, Falmouth\, MA 02540

SUMMARY:A Grilled Cheese Social
DESCRIPTION:A grilled cheese may seem like a simple meal! Butter on the griddle\, two pieces of bread and some cheese. It is certainly a delicious choice\, but that can get boring after a while! Many have found their own special remedy for the “normal” grilled cheese…but bringing it up in conversation can bring out the fire in the eye. Some folks don’t use butter at all! Why not some mayonnaise! I hear it gives an extra crunch. Or maybe an obscure mustard\, bacon\, or even bananas. It’s sort of like your parent’s meatloaf. That meatloaf is the only meatloaf you’ll eat! \nAt the Falmouth Public Library – Main Branch on Saturday\, February 28\, 2026 at 12:00 PM we will be making the grilled cheese sandwiches on flattop burners. We will be providing a variety of bread and cheeses. Don’t forget to bring your secret ingredient(s) and share it with your friends and other library patrons! \nThe event is appropriate for patrons ages 11+ unless accompanied by an adult. There will be library staff enjoying and overseeing the event. Adults and parents are more than welcome to join in on the fun! We will be having games and activities all about the Hermann Room while we cook up our glorious melted cheese and bread. The games may be a little “cheesy” (without the mess). The event is from 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM. We hope to see you there! \nSigning up is very much appreciated. You can access the registration page HERE on our Falmouth Public Library events page or give us a call at 508-457-2555 x 7. Please reach out if you have any questions or problems with registering!
