SUMMARY:Falmouth Reads Together Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Falmouth Reads Together town wide read is Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom\, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer. West Falmouth Library will host a book discussion Thursday\, April 9 from 6-7 p.m. All are welcome! For a full list of Falmouth Reads Together events\, visit the website. \nAs a botanist\, Robin Wall Kimmerer has been trained to ask questions of nature with the tools of science. As a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation\, she embraces the notion that plants and animals are our oldest teachers. In Braiding Sweetgrass\, Kimmerer brings these two lenses of knowledge together to take us on “a journey that is every bit as mythic as it is scientific\, as sacred as it is historical\, as clever as it is wise” (Elizabeth Gilbert). \nDrawing on her life as an indigenous scientist\, and as a woman\, Kimmerer shows how other living beings―asters and goldenrod\, strawberries and squash\, salamanders\, algae\, and sweetgrass―offer us gifts and lessons\, even if we’ve forgotten how to hear their voices. In reflections that range from the creation of Turtle Island to the forces that threaten its flourishing today\, she circles toward a central argument: that the awakening of ecological consciousness requires the acknowledgment and celebration of our reciprocal relationship with the rest of the living world. For only when we can hear the languages of other beings will we be capable of understanding the generosity of the earth\, and learn to give our own gifts in return.

SUMMARY:“Amelia Earhart: Pioneer in Innovation” by Sheryl Faye
DESCRIPTION:Sherly Faye\, who performs one-woman shows around the world\,  will portray Amelia Earhart! “Amelia Earhart: Pioneer in Innovation” on Sunday\, April 12\, at 1 PM. \nRegistration is required. A donation of $20 is suggested donation. This event is intended for adult patrons but the entire family is welcome to join. \nAmelia Earhart’s fearless\, adventuresome spirit leads to hair-raising rides down her homemade roller coaster\, and she is enthralled with the wonders of the new “flying machines” during a family vacation to the Iowa State Fair. As she matures\, she is fulfilled by her work as a nurse’s aide and begins to consider a career in medicine. This idea “flies out the window\,” however\, when she pays a pilot $1.00 to take her up for a short “hop” in his plane. From then on\, the science of aviation becomes her passion as flying becomes her career. \nShe follows her dreams with an indomitable spirit\, and her story will inspire everyone to pursue their own budding interests\, whatever they may be\, and will also reinforce the importance of family\, respect for others and individuality.

SUMMARY:Favorite Poem Project
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Calliope Poetry\, we are so pleased to once again host the Favorite Poem Project on Sunday\, April 26\, from 3 to 5 PM. Join us in hearing community members from all walks of life share their favorite poem and what makes it special to them. \nAbout the Favorite Poem Project: At its inception\, the Favorite Poem Project put out an open call for people across the country to share their favorite poems. Eighteen thousand Americans—from ages 5 to 97\, from every state\, representing a range of occupations\, kinds of education\, and backgrounds—wrote to the project. From those thousands of letters and emails\, the Favorite Poem Project created a series of short documentaries and anthologies. The project continues to create short films and educational resources\, and to host readings\, in order to document and encourage the sharing of poetry across the world.
