National Hispanic Heritage Month Film Screening
September 30 @ 6:00 pm
The Woods Hole Public Library and the Woods Hole Diversity Advisory Committee are celebrating National Hispanic Heritage month with a free screening of a new film about an aspiring toy designer from El Salvador struggling to bring his unusual ideas to life in NY.
As time on his work visa runs out, a job assisting an erratic art-world outcast becomes his only hope to stay in the country and realize his dream. From writer/director Julio Torres comes a surreal adventure through the equally treacherous worlds of New York City and the U.S. Immigration system. This film was written/directed by Julio Torres, and stars Torres along with Tilda Swinton and RZA.
The Library’s licensing agreement prohibits advertising of the film’s title outside the Library, so those who cannot figure out the title should call the Woods Hole Public Library at 508-548-8961 or visit woodsholepubliclibrary.org.
This screening will take place at the Woods Hole Public Library on Monday, September 30, at 6 PM. All are welcome to attend.
National Hispanic Heritage Month is annually celebrated from September 15 to October 15 in the United States for recognizing the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States. September 15 was chosen as the starting point for the commemoration because it is the anniversary of the Cry of Dolores, which marked the start of the Mexican War of Independence. The 30-day period also includes many dates of importance in the Hispanic community.
The Woods Hole Diversity Advisory Committee and the greater Woods Hole and Falmouth Community are hosting a series of events to share and acknowledge the rich cultural and social traditions of the Hispanic/Latinx community. This year’s theme for National Hispanic Heritage Month, “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together”, is apt for our Woods Hole community which has been a hub and center for scientific discovery in the marine sciences, oceanography, fisheries sciences, medical research, and many more areas of STEM since the 1870’s.
