Supper Club Dinner & Talk with Dr. Walter Massey

July 11 @ 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm

$135 – $145

Highfield Hall & Gardens welcomes Dr. Walter Massey, physicist, author, barrier breaker, and insatiably curious man, for an evening of Dinner and Discussion on Thursday, August 1, from 5 to 9 PM.

Tickets are $135 for members and $145 for non-members.

When Walter Massey was last at Highfield, his book, In the Eye of the Storm: My Time as Chairman of Bank of America During the Country’s Worst Financial Crisis, was the focus of the evening. The guests for this sold-out event just began to get to know Dr. Massey through his stories, leaving those who attended deeply impressed by this diversly accomplished yet humble man, and wanting more.

A March 2024 New York Times article featuring Dr. Massey provided a tantalizing peek into what makes him tick. He is a Black man who grew up in the segregated South, an adept if not unconventional leader, and a brilliant science mind. Massey has worked for racial equity and been an advocate for Black students, was president of Morehouse college and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, served on boards of companies like Motorola and McDonald’s, and steered Bank of America following the housing market crash. More recently, through his local connection with the Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory Board, he was tapped to lead the board of the Giant Magellan Telescope project in Chile.

Walter has stories to tell based on his broad experiences and passions, incomparable insights, and depth of knowledge across topics, not to mention eating dinner with Queen Elizabeth II and dancing with Oprah Winfrey. Come to the supper table and enjoy this unique opportunity for an intimate conversation with an inimitable man…plus cocktails, and gourmet dinner.

Walter Massey is currently chair of the Giant Magellan Telescope Organization, chair of the City Colleges of Chicago Trustees, president emeritus of Morehouse College and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and senior advisor to the president and emeritus trustee of the University of Chicago. Massey began his career as a physicist at leading research universities before his appointment as Director of Argonne National Laboratory and then as Director of the National Science Foundation under President George H.W. Bush. In 1995 Massey returned to Morehouse College, his alma mater, where he was President for more than a decade. Massey is a former Director of McDonald’s Corporation and is former Chairman of Bank of America. He has also served on the boards of numerous non-profit organizations, including the Mellon Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, and the Smithsonian Institution and has received honorary degrees from 41 universities, including Yale, Harvard, Northwestern, Columbia, and Brown.

Highfield’s science and environment speaker series is made possible in part through the generous support of the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, Cape Cod 5, Brabson Family Foundation, The Falmouth Fund, Woods Hole Foundation & Woodwell Climate Research Center.

Dinner is catered by Pink Door Catering, in Mashpee, MA.
